This is a guest post from an anonymous woman who shared the letter she sent to her Senators. I invite you to share something similar with your elected officials. Feel free to copy, paste, share, send, shout and make it yours. Every voice counts.
Dear Senator __________,
I’m one of your constituents. Traditionally, I have voted for the Democrats and have always been left-aligned, but am recently feeling abandoned by “my” party. Above all else, my lifelong passion and concern has been for that of women and our rights, which the Democrats have stopped representing. I am looking to change parties and am intending on supporting a candidate that prioritizes women, our language and our rights.
I voted for Biden with the hopes of student loans, healthcare, or the housing crisis being addressed. Instead, I have found myself being robbed of my language, my spaces, and my identity. President Biden has moved to degrade women’s rights, opting instead to prioritize the feelings of mentally ill narcissists who summarize womanhood as some abstract, undefinable concept within their head. Biden chose to support this misogynistic sentiment over vulnerable women by allowing men into their spaces, even when they are in stages of undress. Over women with excellent athletic potential who are now being made a mockery of, as with the outrageous actions taking place at UPenn. Over the women who now have to share prisons with sexual predators. Biden and the Democrats have unequivocally chosen to cast women to the wolves with their contemptible actions that degrade our status as first-class citizens. They label us as right-wing or conservative when we speak for ourselves, demand our own language, and demand our own representation, to which I say fine—I will become a conservative if that’s what it takes for women to reclaim our right to our identity.
I am writing you this long letter asking for your unwavering support of women as a sex class. We are not an idea. We are not a feeling. We are not an abstract concept. Just recently in the news women were sexually harassed and degraded by their colleagues at their place of employment and it went largely ignored. American women have one of the highest maternal mortality rates compared to other first world nations. Women couldn’t even compete in the Olympics a century ago or be admitted to all Ivy League schools.
I will not tolerate the rampant disrespect towards a class of people who gained many, if not most, of our legal rights less than a century ago. Especially while we still live in a country where it not only costs thousands to give birth, but you have a higher chance of DYING as well. We are real and so are our problems, they shouldn’t be diluted by transvestites or confused men who think womanhood is defined by femininity, not the bodily experiences and realities we live.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Woman
